5 p.m. - How the Chili Judging Looked

Judges were Asheboro Mayor David Jarrell, Rock 92's Chris Kelly, Salisbury food writer and author Cyndi Allison and professional comedian John Phillips.

They tasted chili and took notes. This is one of the judge's notes. It does not reflect the final winner. Judges did not know which bowl of chili came from which cook. All tasting was done inside The Bagel Shop - which had Asheboro police stationed at the door to ensure the judges were left alone to taste, comment and do their job.

  2. I see by the pictures several chili samples have the contestants' names on their labels. Yeah, that's fair.

  3. Chili containers were marked with booth numbers and no names. The big pot had a label welcoming Rock 92, but had no mention of name. One of the judges was a professional barbecue and chili writer from Salisbury. She has written for Our State and numerous publications and Websites. We have shown the photos to explain that the judging did not indicate the cook, except by number - and that the reference to the booth was never given to the judges.

  4. I see that our chili number is nowhere listed on the judges sheet you posted, I wonder if it was even tasted. We asked several times throught the day where the judges were and when we were supposed to take our sample to them and no one seemed to no, not even Greta. This information should have been given out at the morning meeting, that never took place! We felt that this contest was more about giving away free chili to get people to come downtown, and not about an actual contest. Maybe next year contestants can be given better direction.

  5. Thanks for your posting and for sharing your thoughts and concerns. With every first time event, there is a learning curve - and we all learned quite a bit. Your comments will certainly be shared during planning meetings for 2010. We thank you for taking the time to write. If you have any other comments or suggestions, please share them with us. And - thank you for spending your time, energy and money to participate.

  6. I would like to add that if we're expected to feed the entire county and then some...the registration fee should be FAR LESS than $50. I've checked out other chili contests and their entry fees range from $10 to $20. Cooking chili is expensive enough...much less having to pay someone $50 to even enter the contest. I realize the money goes toward charities...but geeze...keep in mind the economy and our small community next time!

  7. Thank you for your comments and suggestions. The beans, meat, sauces, etc. do add up in cost, not to mention the price of propane gas. Organizers will review all aspects of the event before next year, so your comments are truly welcomed. Thank you.

  8. Nice judging sheet. What happened to the chili being judged on texture, flavor, texture of the meat, and color? That is what we were told the criteria was, not sombody scribbling down..."ohhh made me cry" The chili should have been judged on a point system 10 points for each judging criteria, then the points be tallied at the end to figure the winner. Also the judges should not be permitted to discuss amongst themselves what they think of the chili (this could influence the judges decisions) all judging should have been done in plain view of the contestants( perhaps even on a stage so everyone can enjoy the suspense) and the judges should remain silent with their focus on judging chili. Cooking contests are serious business, i hope this one is taken a lot more seriously next year.

  9. Thank you for your comments. They're being added to a list of discussion points for future events. Suggestions have also been made to ensure judges don't see chili booths at all - or not have cooks give tastings until after the judging has occurred. With so many cooks indicating their interest for 2010, organizers are scrutinizing all aspects of the first event. So thank you for taking time to write your comments and pass them along.
